There was an article on how realistic/unrealistic the Indiana Jones movies are. But now I can’t find it… I think I saw it on Yahoo a few days ago. I found a different article, see above… Petra is a real place (where Indy went to acquire the Holy Grail). I think the actual building he went into was an old bank or something like that.
I have heard of Egyptian tombs having curses on them, which supposedly affected Egyptologists back in the early 1900′s or so. The tombs also had various passages, which were used to avert tomb robbers. The Egyptians eventually began building less obvious tombs underground instead of using pryamids.
I do Archaeology in Minnesota and have yet to see a trap door or secret entrance, unfortunately. But, I’m sure they’re out there somewhere…
Some places appear to have been trapped. In fact many Egyptian tombs have false pathways to deter graverobbers. That being said however of all the archaeologists, including my father and god parents and numerous people I worked for, I have never met a single one who ever experienced traps on a dig site. No giant boulders, no poison arrows, no bottomless pits.
Not to that extreme but there are secret hidden chambers that hold treasures and valuables. “The Curse of King Tut” may have in part inspired the legends and myths of the ancient pyramids and what deadly dangers they hold.
Trap doors is about it. None of the elaborate moving traps exist. You have to consider what would power a spiked roof to come down then back up at the pull of a lever. The technology did not exist. Besides why would they bother when trap doors and mazes and giant stone doors stop most people.

It took a bit of searching but the about link is to an article that should answer the question.

i’m sure there are things like that but i wouldnt think that they are so complex and imaginative with a huge rolling boulder chasing after you.
